Hello , gf1

Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

For this problem, I suggest you go to Control Panel > Power Options > System Settings, select Change settings that are currently unavailable

Image

then disable Turn on fast start-up (recommended),

Image

and see if there will be any difference.

If that doesn't help, you can also update your battery drive for your device. Since you've updated Windows recently, the root cause may be compatibility issue between your battery drive and your Windows update.

Or you can also revert to an older version of Windows. This can help determine whether this issue is caused by Windows update or not.

To revert to older version, you can uninstall the update to try to resolve the issue.

  1. Select theStart button, then selectSettings>Update & Security>Windows Update> View your update history> Uninstall updates.

  2. Right-click the update you want to remove, and then selectUninstall.

If the problem still can't be resolved, please let me know, and I'll figure out another workaround.

Kind regards

Thanks Yuhao. I will turn off the fast startup and let you know if this solves the issue before I try reverting to the previous version of windows. Since my laptop is plugged in when this issue occurs, how would the battery driver affect this?

Disabling Fast Start-up did not fix the problem. After my computer reached the 20 minute inactive limit, it locked up requiring a hard reboot in order for me to get back in.

What about reverting to older version and updating your battery drive? By the way, even if your laptop is plugged in, the battery is still being charged. That's why I say the battery drive may be related to this issue.

Yes, I finally uninstalled the 21H2 feature update and this appears to have solved the sleep/freeze problem.

Just to confirm that this feature update did cause the problem, I think I will try reinstalling it in the next couple of days to see if the issue happens again.

After I uninstalled the 21H2 update I was still having issues with Outlook and I found out that I had some Office 365 updates pending so I installed those. This makes me wonder if Office 365 may have also contributed to the sleep issue.

Can you tell me how to check to make sure the battery driver is current?

Your battery driver is provided by your laptop manufacturer, so you may need to contact them for assistance.

You can report this issue to Microsoft tech team about the 21H2 update so that they can realize it and fix it. To report this issue, send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app .

You can also try reverting to an older version of Office if you would like to. See How to revert to an earlier version of Office.

I am still doing some additional research. I am not quite sure if the 21H2 update is the cause of the problem.

When I closed the lid on my computer last night, it froze up again and did not go into sleep mode. This required me to do another hard reboot.

I had the keyboard on my computer replaced a few days ago and the repair person told me that in order to replace the keyboard, he had to disconnect and remove the monitor (lid). I am beginning to wonder if maybe the lid did not get reconnected properly since it is starting to look like my sleep/freeze issues are related to closing the lid on my laptop.

As soon as I know more, I will update this post.

Hi Yuhao,

I have spent several hours over the past few days running test under various scenarios regarding the sleep/freeze issue I reported.

I found out that when I put the computer to sleep by either letting it time out, or by the start > power > sleep method, or by quickly pressing the power button that it appeared to go to sleep as expected. However, after waking up the computer and then putting it to sleep a second time by any of the above methods, the computer would appear to freeze which would require a hard reboot by holding down the power button for 5 seconds.

I have reviewed all of the power/sleep related settings for my HP computer and they are all set to the HP recommended settings.

Having done all of this recent testing, I don't think that the sleep mode has ever worked properly, or the way it is described in the Microsoft documentation for Windows 10 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/shut-down-sleep-or-hibernate-your-pc-2941d165-7d0a-a5e8-c5ad-8c972e8e6eff

I have decided to just disable the sleep mode from the settings page - start > settings > system > power & sleep

Thanks for your time assisting me. It was worth it to just learn about the Feedback Hub app that will allow me to have direct access to Microsoft in the future.
